When I first meet with a client they are often under a great deal of stress. They have just been arrested for drunk driving and they want to know, before anything else, what's the worst thing that is going to happen to them.
So I often want to discuss with them what the potential sanctions of a drunk driving conviction might be, under their particular circumstances.
There are three different categories of punishments that can be imposed.
The first are the judicial sanctions. Those are the penalties that will be imposed on you by the judge. They are individualized, meaning that they can be different from judge to judge, court to court, and person to person. They include things like the amount of jail time, fines and costs, how many community service hours, and the period of probation. All of those things will be imposed on you
by the court.
