The third area of consequences for a drunk driving conviction are those that result from the conviction itself. Sometimes those can be the most serious, and the only way to avoid them is to make sure you avoid the conviction altogether. For example, as you probably already may know, your insurance rates will go up if you are convicted of drunk driving. More significantly, things that you may not of thought of or be aware of, are things like how it may affect your employment.
Some people find that once their employer learns of their conviction, that they are passed over for promotions. Sometimes they are even terminated. On other occasions they may find themselves unable to obtain employment because possible employers don't want to hire somebody that has a drunk driving conviction on their record. There are also some countries that preclude you from being able to enter the country because you have a drunk driving conviction, most notably Canada. People from the Detroit area frequently travel to Canada and their surprised to learn that if Canada knows at the time they are trying to gain entry and have a drunk driving conviction, they will not be able to enter the country.
So when you look at all of the consequences of drunk driving make sure that you consider the judicial sanctions, the secretary of state or driver's license sanctions, as well as the sanctions of the conviction itself.
